10 best places to see fall colors near Rockford, Illinois

ROCKORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Although autumn does not officially begin until Sept. 22, leaves are starting to change color, which means it will be soon be time to enjoy the colors of fall.

Northern Illinois puts on a spectacular show every year, and the Rockford area is no exception. From forest preserves to riverside trails, here are 10 of the best spots within 40 miles of Rockford to soak in the season’s fiery reds, golden yellows, and burnt oranges.

With over 3,000 acres of forest, lakes, and trails, Rock Cut is a fall favorite. Hike, bike, or drive through to enjoy the vibrant foliage reflected in Pierce Lake.

2. Anderson Japanese Gardens

Just off Highway 20, this preserve offers more than five miles of trails and a nature playscape. Hammocks are up through November for leaf lounging.

7. Spencer Conservation Area

This riverside preserve features over three miles of trails, a memorial woodland, and a variety of colorful trees like sycamores and silver maples.

One of the most scenic spots in Winnebago County, this 529-acre preserve offers peaceful trails through woods and prairie along the Sugar River.

9. Nygren Wetlands Preserve

This 721-acre preserve features restored prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats. The 2.5-mile Dianne Nora Trail is ideal for a fall nature walk.

10. Lowden State Park

Just under 40 miles from Rockford, this park is home to the iconic 50-foot Chief Black Hawk statue and sweeping views of the Rock River Valley.
