Many in Topeka spotted a large plane flying low over the Capital City on Sept. 8. Some people, like Jonathan Medina, posted videos to social media of the unusual sight of the B-2 Spirit bomber aircraft.
“Seeing an operational B-2 in the air is a rare experience,” Medina said. “The aircraft are housed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, and sightings are uncommon but leave a memorable impression. Seeing one for the first time was an experience within itself.”
27 News reached out to the 509th Bomb Wing from Whiteman Air Force Base to learn more about what the military plane was doing flying around Topeka. A spokesperson with the 509th Bomb Wing said that flight details are not released regarding B-2 Spirit bombers due to operational security reasons.
“The B-2 is frequently flown on routine training missions both nationally and internationally in order to help our aircrew maintain peak readiness.”
509th Bomb Wing statement excerpt
B-2 Spirit bombers, like the one seen over Topeka, were recently used in a high-profile bombing mission in Iran earlier this year. The 509th Bomb Wing in Missouri is the only air base in the U.S. that operates the B-2.
B-2 Spirits are multi-role bombers capable of delivering both conventional explosives and nuclear weapons, according to the U.S. Air Force (USAF). The planes are noteworthy for their stealth capabilities that allow them to attack heavily defended targets, deliver a large payload of munitions and keep a low profile when entering enemy airspace.
