Ritchie County man makes it to second round of USA Mullet Championships

PENNSBORO, W.Va. (WBOY) — A Ritchie County man has made it to round two in this year’s USA Mullet Championships and needs your help to make it to the final.

Scrappy Perine of Pennsboro is currently a top 100 finalist in the competition. The championships market themselves as the #1 mullet competition in the country, and this isn’t Perine’s first time in the competition. Perine’s mullet, which he calls the ‘Mountaineer Mullet,’ finished 3rd in the country in 2023 and 5th in 2022.

Each year, the competition raises money for an organization through its voting process. This year, all proceeds go toward Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors, which helps build mortgage-free accessible homes for wounded combat veterans.

Scrappy Perine spoke with 12 News about what it means to him to represent the state once again, all while raising money for a good cause.

“It means a lot to have the community support along the way and to be able to be recognized to help raise money for a great cause; it’s all worth it. I know some people think the mullet is not the greatest thing, but it’s a key to help raise money for others that need it,” Perine said.

The second round of voting ends on Sept. 10. With Perine currently sitting in the top 5, he’s a favorite to make it to the final round. The winner will be announced in October and will receive $10,000. To vote for Perine, you can visit this link.
