Montgomery County detectives link double shooting to August homicide

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Detectives in Montgomery County said the suspects believed to be involved in a double shooting Friday night could be connected to a homicide that happened last month.

The three victims across the two incidents were all 17 years old.

Just after 9:45 p.m. on Sept. 5, the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) received a 911 call from a person saying he’d been shot in Local Branch Local Park, along with additional calls reporting the sound of gunfire in the area of 711 Langley Drive.

Responding officers found two teenage boys suffering from gunshot wounds.

One 17-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon.

The other victim, 17-year-old Charly Blayner Vail Lucas of Silver Spring, tragically died at the scene.

Homicide investigators determined the shooting could be connected to another homicide that happened on Tuesday, Aug. 19, when 17-year-old Jaril Verde Murillo was shot and killed on University Boulevard East.

MCPD previously told DC News Now that Murillo was walking with two others when suspects shot in the trio’s direction and ran away as the teen collapsed in the road.

While processing the scene at Long Branch Park, detectives were executing a search warrant at the Silver Spring home of 20-year-old Jhony Steve Rosales Castillo on 11th Avenue. The search, which happened on Saturday, led to Rosales Casillo’s arrest.

Juan Carlos Gutierrez-Hernandez, 18, was also arrested after the search.

MCPD said officers found guns and “additional evidence” linking the suspects to both of the deadly shootings.

They were both charged with two counts of first-degree murder of a minor victim, attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm under the age of 21.

They are being held pending a bond hearing, which is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 8.
