(KRON) — A 43-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after being found shot at a homeless encampment in Hayward on Aug. 22. Authorities announced on Friday that the suspected gunman has been arrested.

The Hayward Police Department responded on Aug. 22 at 8:08 p.m. to a homeless encampment near the 30000 block of San Antonio Street for a reported medical emergency. Arriving officers located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The 43-year-old man, who was not identified by police, was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

On Friday, police identified the suspect in the fatal shooting as Rosario Raul Rodriguez Cazares, 49, of Hayward. Cazares was arrested and booked into the Santa Rita Jail for the suspicion of murder.

Hayward PD said it delayed the public release of information in the case to “protect the integrity of the investigation, to preserve the unconventional crime scene, and to prevent the suspect’s flight from justice.”

The death marked Hayward’s sixth homicide of 2025.
