Girl who protected classmate during Annunciation Church shooting released from hospital, to get award

Lydia Kaiser released from hospitalA 12-year-old girl wounded in the Annunciation Church shooting has been released from the hospital but still faces a long road in her recovery.

A 12-year-old girl who was injured while protecting a classmate during the Annunciation Church shooting in Minneapolis has been released from the hospital.

Lydia Kaiser is now walking and talking, according to an update shared on her GoFundMe page.

She previously underwent two brain surgeries and will have another one soon to replace a section of her skull, her family says.

Kaiser is one of 23 people wounded during the mass shooting. Two of those victims, 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski, were killed in the attack.

Merkel was laid to rest on Sunday. A celebration of life for Moyski is scheduled for this coming Sunday.

One child remains hospitalized with serious injuries while all other victims are now back home, although many still face long roads in their recovery.

The Uvalde Foundation for Kids, a national nonprofit, also says it will honor Kaiser with its national student heroism award and provide her with a scholarship.

“There is no question that Lydia’s selflessness and dedication to her friends and peers manifested that day into her brave action to risk her own life to protect another student from gunfire,” the foundation said. “Lydia faced danger in a display of heroism — that will not be forgotten.”
