Around 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, members of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a gunshot wound in the Shoestring Trail area of Clintonville. While en route to the scene, 911 dispatched alerted deputies that the victim was a child.
Upon arrival, life resuscitating measures were taken on the child by the Clintonville Fire Department, White Sulphur Springs EMS, and Fairlea Volunteer Fire Department. The child was pronounced dead after several attempts.
In response, the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Team was activated.
Four other children were identified as being present at the house, with three of those being present in the room when the shooting occurred. After interviewing the children as well as reviewing the evidence, the kids were released back to their families.
The investigation remains active. The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office is awaiting evidence returns from the Forensic Lab and an Autopsy Investigation by the West Virginia Chief Medical Examiner’s Office.
Deputy S.H. Peacock is designated as the lead investigator in this case.
The Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the Greenbrier County Public Defender’s Office, and the West Virginia Division of Health and Human Services Child Protective Services helped with the interviews due to the nature of the case.
No names have been released at this time.
