Strong thunderstorm to hit Salt Lake City, National Weather Service says

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Special Weather Statement for Salt Lake City, warning of a strong thunderstorm Sunday afternoon.

A strong thunderstorm will impact portions of northwestern Salt Lake and southeastern Davis counties through 3:15 p.m. today, Sept. 7, according to the NWS.

Doppler radar was reportedly tracking a strong thunderstorm seven miles west of Salt Lake City International Airport, or 10 miles west of Salt Lake City, moving northeast at 15 mph.

The NWS said to expect wind gusts up to 50 mph and half-inch hail. Gusty winds could reportedly knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible.

The following locations will be impacted, according to the NWS: Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Layton, Bountiful, Farmington, Kaysville, North Salt Lake, Centerville, Woods Cross, West Bountiful, Salt Lake City International Airport, Emigration Canyon, Magna, University Of Utah, and Antelope Island State Park.

This includes the following highways: I-15 between mile markers 307 and 322, I-80 between mile markers 108 and 119.

“If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building,” the NWS said in the statement.
