The new QB went 14/19, accounting for 358 total yards and six total touchdowns.
“The biggest difference for me is basically I can control the game more, like the ball is in my hands every play and I feel like I could be a difference maker,” Wrightner said.
Wrightner has played quarterback before, but its been a couple of years.
“A little while to get your sea legs back underneath you so to speak, and so I think that’ll be a week to week type situation,” head coach Gerry Stanford said.
“At the beginning it was kind of frustrating, but we all just had to settle down. Once the game got going we knew what type of team we are,” Wrightner said.
In those years he’s played corner and wide receiver ultimately helping him when it came time to be the quarterback.
“It just helped me know what everybody’s gonna be doing on the field, like when I was playing corner and just knowing the coverage and stuff to what the defense line up to helps me for offense,” Wrightner said. “I know like what type of coverage they play or how they align so I know they’re playing like a cover two or three, so like it kind of helps me a lot.”
By the second half of last week’s game against Tyler Legacy, Wrightner was operating like a natural.
“Really felt comfortable within the offense, did a lot of things with his feet, which we obviously knew that was something that would be a big positive for us this year, his ability to scramble and run, and that proved really, really, handy for us but also just his efficiency,” Stanford said. “Only have 4 incompletions, to have more touchdowns than incompletions is that’s a good night right there.”
Wrightner’s athleticism opened up the offense generating more yards and leading the tigers to a big week one win.
“I extend to plays well with my legs like when things wasn’t open I was able to run and still get positive yards,” Wrightner said.
Although wrightner had a successful week one under center, there’s always things to improve on.
“Yeah, he got tired. I think during the 3rd quarter he was ready for a break for a minute, but, overall I was really pleased with his effort,” Stanford said.
“Just guessing on some of the plays, just taking what the defense gives me and stop trying to be greedy,” Wrightner said.
Wrightner and the Texas High Tigers compete next on Friday, as they host Argyle Liberty Christian at Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
