K-State football stunned by Army at home

MANHATTAN (KSNT)- K-State football lost a heartbreaker Saturday night, falling to Army at home 24-21.

The Wildcats led 21–17 early in the fourth quarter, but Army managed the clock to perfection.

The Black Knights had a 14-play, 56-yard drive that quarterback Cale Hellum finished to put Army on top.

“I’m disappointed in the loss just like everyone else is,” K-State head Chris Klieman said. “I know that we have a good football team, and I’m going to come back tomorrow and I’m going to give it my all with those guys.”

Avery Johnson and K-State would have a chance to respond, but Johnson was intercepted under two minutes by Army’s Collin Matteson, which would seal the game.

Johnson finished the day 15-25 for 172 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He connected with Jaren Tibbs for a 32-yard score in the second quarter.

The other touchdown for K-State on the day came from Bryce Noernberg on a 99-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

The difference in Saturday’s contest was Army being able to control the clock.

Army was in control of possession for 40 minutes and 29 seconds of game time.

The Black Knights would score three touchdowns on long drives in the second half to come away with the win.

K-State will have a short turnaround as they gear up for Arizona on Friday night on the road.
