Emporia State football loses to No. 10 Angelo State on the road

SAN ANGELO, TX (KSNT)- Emporia State football (1-1) struggled on the road Saturday night, falling to No. 10 Angelo State 41-20. 

The Hornets dug themselves into a hole early on, trailing 27-3 after a quarter.

ESU would find the endzone in the second quarter when Ben Harris connected with Malik O’Atis for a 16-yard touchdown pass. 

Kicker Caden Dodson knocked in his second field goal of the half from 25 yards to make it 27-12 at the half. He connected on a 26-yard field goal in the first quarter. 

After a scoreless third quarter, Harris would find Kingsley Bennett for a 91-yard score. 

Angelo State would add 12 more points to pull away for the win. 

Harris was 23 of 51 for 357 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions. He threw a pick-six in the first quarter, part of Angelo State’s dominant quarter. 

The Hornets rushed for 51 yards, while Angelo State ran wild with 249 yards.

“The fight in our guys was good,” Emporia State head coach Garin Higgins said. “We’re going to surprise some people with this team because we have fight in us, which was good to see.”

Emporia State will have a bye and then hit the road again to open up conference play against Nebraska-Kearney on Sept 20.
