Berks city names new police chief
READING, Pa. (WHTM) — A Pennsylvania city has a new top cop.

Reading Police Deputy Chief Javier Ruiz was named acting chief for the city, Mayor Eddie Moran announced Friday.

“Together we are on a strong path toward achieving our main goal, which is making Reading a safe and welcoming city for our residents and guests alike.” said Ruiz.

Former Chief Elias Vazquez is stepping away for personal reasons, Moran said, prompting leadership changes in the department.

“Chief Vazquez has led with dedication, integrity, and vision,” said Mayor Moran. “During his time at the helm, our city has seen meaningful progress in crime reduction. With the strategies he set in place to not only address enforcement but also build trust and relationships in our neighborhoods, we saw a 21% crime reduction in 2024, with this trend continuing with a 32% crime reduction in the first quarter of 2025, and consecutive crime reductions in the last six months.”

Ruiz, the city said, brings extensive experience and a strong record of community engagement.

Captain of Patrol Aaron Demko has also been promoted to Deputy Chief.

“I have full confidence in this leadership team,” Moran said. “Together, they will continue the progress we have made and guide our city forward with professionalism, accountability, and vision.”
