The St. Paul Police Department is mourning the loss of two of its officers in the past week.

The police department said that Officer Eric McArthur died unexpectedly after serving the city for nine years, including as a member of the Canine Unit for the last four years with his K9, Finn.

His cause of death has not been revealed at this time.

“If you had the pleasure of knowing Eric, you know he cared deeply and was a friend to many. His mentorship, enthusiasm, and laughter will be greatly missed. Please keep Eric’s family in your thoughts during this difficult time,” the department said in a social media post.

In addition, the department confirmed that retired Sgt. Don Grundhauser passed away.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, his wife of 31 years, Kelly Grundhauser, said he had been battling stage 4 colon cancer and leaves behind two sons.

She released a statement, which says, in part:

“Our lives are forever altered with you gone. You touched so many more than you will ever know. I love you honey. You were a good man. I will do all I can to keep your legacy and memory alive.”
