BATON ROUGE, La. (
Louisiana First) — A family in Baton Rouge has a lemonade stand featured on the new Baton Rouge Monopoly board game. But for the Hayward family, their business is about much more than selling drinks.
In 2013, the Hayward family started Leroy’s Lip Smack’n Lemonade. They wanted to help Leroy Jr., their son with autism, gain confidence and life skills. What started as a simple idea has grown into a thriving business with a powerful mission.
“It gave him purpose,” Sherilyn Hayward said. “And we wanted to inspire other parents that have a child like Leroy, just love on them, promote them, inspire them to do what they like to do.”
People are now celebrating that mission in a unique way. The business got picked for the Monopoly: Baton Rouge Edition board after a huge number of community votes.
“They called us and said because we had received so many votes for favorite things in Baton Rouge, we were chosen to be given a community space square,” Hayward said.
For the family, the recognition goes far beyond the game. Each cup of lemonade stands for a conversation. It also brings awareness and encouragement to families with children who have disabilities.
“Parents are now wanting to do things with their kids that have disabilities, so I want to say kudos—hooray—to the autism community,” Hayward said.
Looking ahead, the family plans to expand their offerings. Next summer, they will introduce a frozen lemonade product to store shelves.
You can find Leroy’s Lip Smack’n Lemonade at Tiger Stadium and local grocery stores like Matherne’s, Rouses, and Albertsons.
For the Haywards, it’s proof that with love and determination, even the simplest ideas can change a life.
