RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A man from Johnston County who bought his Powerball ticket online is now a millionaire after winning a big prize in Monday night’s drawing.
According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, Daryl Steinhoff of Clayton purchased a $3 Powerball ticket that was full of “family numbers” through Online Play. It ended up winning $2 million in the Labor Day night drawing.
“The next day I got an email saying that I won something,” said Steinhoff. “I was ecstatic and in disbelief.”
The Clayton man said he called his daughter and his girlfriend after learning that his ticket matched numbers on all five of the white balls drawn Monday. While that normally would’ve been a $1 million win, with Power Play, it doubled to $2 million.
On Thursday, Steinhoff visited lottery headquarters in Raleigh to claim his prize. He took home $1,435,001 after state and federal taxes. The big winner said he plans to use some of that money to buy a new home.
No one won the big Powerball jackpot either Monday or Wednesday nights. As of Friday night, the jackpot stands at $1.8 billion ahead of Saturday night’s drawing. According to Powerball’s website, it is the second-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history just behind the $2.04 billion one won on Nov. 7, 2022 in California.
The current Powerball jackpot has an estimated cash value of $826.4 million. The odds of winning it are 1 in 292.2 million.
