Duluth man cited with misdemeanor in connection with Camp House Fire

The DNR and the St. Louis County Attorney’s office have worked together on a citation in connection with the Camp House Fire, according to KSTP’s sister station WDIO.

According to the DNR, Parker John Wilson, 27, now faces misdemeanor failure to extinguish fire.

The agency investigated the fire and believe it was started by an unattended campfire.

The Camp House Fire started May 11 near Brimson and destroyed more than 12,000 acres and more than 150 structures.

There were three wildfires burning across northern Minnesota, with the Camp House fire starting on Sunday, May 11. The Jenkins Creek and Munger Shaw fires flared on May 12. Later that month, officials combined the Camp House and Jenkins Creek fire to form the Brimson Fire Complex.

Over the summer, the St. Louis County Assessor’s Office released preliminary results of their inspection of damages caused by the spring Brimson Complex wildfires. The assessment was done on all properties with structures on them within the perimeters of the Munger Shaw, Jenkins Creek, and Camp House fires.

The Minnesota DNR says all campfires should be constructed and maintained with safety in mind no matter where you are.

Use a designated fire ring or build a campfire in an area cleared of combustible materials 5 feet in all directions around the fire.

Campfires must be 3 feet or less in diameter and not more than 3 feet in height.

Select a level spot a safe distance away from trees, low overhead branches, shrubs, dry grass, or logs to prevent the fire from escaping, and clear all combustibles within 5 feet.

Have a shovel and water available at the campfire site for extinguishing campfires.

Supervise the fire at all times. Even a light breeze could cause the fire to spread.

Extinguish the campfire with water using the “drown and stir” method.
