A man who was allegedly keeping a woman in an apartment has been charged after fatally stabbing a man who tried to get her out.
Lloyd McKenzie, 52, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree assault.
Court documents state that at around 5:50 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to an apartment building on the 1900 block of County Road D East in Maplewood for a stabbing.
Police found a man with multiple stab wounds to his chest and abdomen lying in the hallway. He was later brought to the hospital, where he died on Friday morning.
According to the criminal complaint, the victim, his girlfriend and the girlfriend’s cousin went to visit the girlfriend’s mom after not hearing from her for a few days. When they arrived, McKenzie opened the door but then tried to push the victim’s girlfriend out of the doorway.
McKenzie allegedly then got a steak knife, stabbed the victim and also tried to stab the cousin. The mother reportedly yelled for help and said, “Don’t let him block (or lock) me in,” and then McKenzie closed the door.
Court records show that when officers arrived, they entered the apartment and arrested McKenzie.
The mother told police that she and McKenzie didn’t live together anymore due to “past issues,” and that when she returned from out of state, she found he had broken into her apartment and was living there.
According to court documents, McKenzie, who the woman said was using crack, held her there for three days, took her car keys and cell phones and only allowed her to leave to go to the mall and grocery store.
McKenzie also reportedly followed her around the apartment and would not let her wear any clothes, punched her head several times, threatened her with a screwdriver and strangled her, the complaint notes.
The woman said her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend came to the apartment demanding McKenzie let her out, which is when the daughter’s boyfriend was stabbed.
McKenzie told authorities he and the woman had been smoking marijuana and crack for the past few days and said he wanted to stop, but the woman didn’t agree.
He claimed that when the three people came to the apartment, the daughter’s boyfriend pulled out a gun, causing him to act in self-defense, according to court records.
McKenzie’s first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
