PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland Thorns forward Sophia Wilson (formerly Smith) has welcomed her first child with husband Michael Wilson, she announced on Instagram on Wednesday.

The Olympic gold medalist didn’t share the exact birth date, but did post a picture with the caption, “Gianna Capri Wilson. My little Gigi, I don’t know how I ever lived in this world without you.”

The 25-year-old was the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft and the league’s top scorer in 2023. She married Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson in January 2025 after dating for nearly six years since meeting at Stanford University.

In 2024, she agreed to a contract extension, which made her the league’s highest-paid player. Wilson was the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2022 and scored three goals, which were key to Team USA’s Olympic gold victory in Paris.

Wilson has not yet announced when she will return to the field, but Portland is currently sitting in sixth place in the NWSL rankings going into the final weeks of the season.
