Newborn baby found alive in dumpster behind Budgetel remains at hospital
According to CPD, on Tuesday, around 6:30 p.m., a newborn baby boy was found in a dumpster behind the Budgetel in the 3100 block of Victory Drive.
CPD says after the baby was discovered, he was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional and is currently in NICU.
The Columbus Police Department confirmed with WRBL News 3 on Wednesday that the baby is well and remains at the hospital for further treatment.
CPD says Georgia law provides a safe, legal way for a newborn up to 30 days old to be surrendered safely and anonymously.
Under the Safe Place for Newborns Act, a parent may leave their baby with staff at a hospital, police station, or fire station— no identification required and no criminal charges, according to CPD.
The police department advises the public that a dumpster is not a safe haven and that the law exists to prevent tragedies like this and to protect both infants and parents in crisis.
CPD says authorities are working closely with DFCS to ensure the child’s safety and determine next steps for care and will provide more updates when available.
