Major metro closures on I-494, 94, 35E this weekend

Anyone planning to travel around the Twin Cities metro area this weekend will want to plan ahead due to some major closures.

Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, lanes will close on portions of Interstate 494, I-94 and I-35E. Ramps in those areas will start closing at 8 p.m. Friday.

Those high-traffic closures, in addition to other work going on around the metro, could cause major disruptions without proper planning.

Interstate 494 in Bloomington and Richfield

On I-494, all lanes will close in both directions between Highway 77 and Highway 100 and remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday.

The work-around is to use Highways 77, 62 and 100.

Those headed west on I-494 can use northbound Highway 77 to westbound Highway 62 to southbound Highway 100 to westbound I-494 as a detour.

To head east on I-494, use northbound Highway 100 to eastbound Highway 62 to southbound Highway 77 to eastbound I-494 as a detour.

This closure is scheduled from 10 p.m. Sept. 5 to 5 a.m. on Sept. 8, 2025.

Interstate 94 in St. Paul

On I-94, all eastbound lanes will close from Highway 280 to I-35E until 12:05 a.m. Monday.

The detour will take drivers north onto Highway 280, east on Highway 36 and south on I-35E.

This closure is scheduled from 10 p.m. Sept. 5 to 5 a.m. on Sept. 8, 2025.

Interstate 35E in St. Paul

On I-35E, all northbound lanes will close from Highway 5 to University Avenue until 5 a.m. Monday.

Motorists will be directed east on I-494 and west on I-94.

This closure is scheduled from 10 p.m. Sept. 5 to 5 a.m. on Sept. 8, 2025.

The closures are so Minnesota Department of Transportation crews can make bridge repairs and continue drainage construction. More closures are expected into the fall.

Travelers can check 511MN for the latest traffic conditions and road closures, which would be smart to do before hitting the road this weekend.
