David Hogg and State Senator Nikil Saval to Speak in Montgomery County About Defeating Right-wing Extremism and Fighting for a Progressive Future

Are Democrats in the throes of a leadership crisis and what can younger voters and activists do about it?

On September 10, two young progressives will issue a local call to action aimed at combating the social injustice and harmful inequities resulting from the Trump Administration and its extreme right-wing agenda transforming the country.

Social Justice Indivisible will host the September 10 Montgomery County event featuring Gun law reform activist and former DNC Vice Chair David Hogg and Pennsylvania state Sen. Nikil Saval. 

Topics Hogg and Saval will speak about topics that include affordable health care and housing, quality affordable child care and parental leave policies, higher minimum wage, immigration, and the climate change crisis.

Social Justice Indivisible spokesperson Claire Gawinowicz said the live event aims to explore ways to “address” these issues uppermost on many people’s minds.

“David Hogg is begging the Democratic Party to stand up, fight harder and stop playing it safe. The American people want their leaders in the Democratic Party to have a backbone to fight the mess the country is in,” said Gawinowicz. “Hogg knows, along with us, that many Democratic leaders are ineffective [and] have lost touch with everyday life in America …. He also feels that young people need more representation in Congress to address the challenges they’ll be stuck with in the future.”

Hogg is a survivor of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting, where 17 people were killed by a single gunman. He is co-founder of March for our Lives, a Gen Z advocacy and action organization dedicated to ending gun violence across the U.S.

Saval is “an authentic leader” representing the First Senatorial District of Philadelphia in Harrisburg. Saval addresses the housing crisis, mass immigrant incarceration and wage and climate change crisis in his work at the state capitol, according to Gawinowicz.

“Democrats can’t be effective on these pressing issues by using the same old tactics,” she added.

Promoting young leaders is about getting younger people involved in politics so they can help to shape the world, political climate and economic policies about which they’ll eventually become stewards, she said.

“This [event] is a call to action. The attendees are well-educated, and they know what’s wrong. We need to know what to do about it, which is what [Hogg and Saval] will address,” Gawinowicz said.
