Chicago’s Mexican Independence Day festival postponed amid ICE raid fears

CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has announced his readiness to take legal action to prevent National Guard troops from entering Chicago amid expected ICE raids this weekend.

The anticipated raids have led to the indefinite postponement of Chicago’s Mexican Independence Day Festival, originally scheduled to begin in eight days at Grant Park, due to concerns it might be targeted.

“Part of their kind of nefarious plan is begin with ICE, cause mayhem on the ground and by doing that say that there’s a need for military troops on the ground to protect ICE,” Pritzker said.

Some Chicagoans, frustrated with the city’s crime rates, express support for the presence of troops.

“You got people still robbing, stealing, killing. Just the other day, a five-year-old boy got killed, shot in the head. It’s like it’s never gonna end. So if Mr. Trump want to bring these troops to Chicago, hey, bring them on,” said Gaynelle Simmons, whose grandson was killed in a shooting.

The festival, known as “El Grito,” attracted 25,000 attendees last year, highlighting its significance to the local community.

Governor Pritzker is urging Chicago residents to document ICE operations on their phones if they witness any activities.

Meanwhile, National Guard troops will remain in Washington, D.C., as their orders have been extended through November.
