A Minnesota Supreme Court ruling has caused the city of Blaine to consider implementing new bans on public nudity at local beaches.
According to the city of Blaine, a Minnesota Supreme Court ruling recently allowed women to show their breasts in public, so long as the act is not done in a display of sexual activity.
Now, the city council is reviewing whether a new ordinance proposal, which would ban nudity at its beaches, would be in violation of the ruling.
According to Blaine Police Chief Brian Podany, the ordinance is being considered due to concerns raised by some residents following the Supreme Court’s ruling.
“In light of the Supreme Court’s decision, our current ordinances do not adequately address the concerns that were brought up in our Community,” Podany explained. “Accordingly, we are working with our City Attorney to draft an ordinance for City Council consideration. We want to ensure that we are respecting the law but also promote livability for those in our community. There are other citie(s) that have things in place currently.”
While no action has been taken to implement a ban at this time, the Blaine city attorney concluded that the court’s ruling allowed for a potential ordinance that could restrict nudity on beaches.
