Baxter County Environmental Committee meets for first time in 12 years to discuss quarry

Meeting for the first time in 12 years, the Baxter County Environmental Committee held a session Tuesday afternoon to discuss what has been going on at the old county quarry on County Road 69 off State Highway 5 South.

A Facebook post in early August by Joey Nault, the son of quorum court member Bob Nault, caused quite a stir. The post questioned the burning of debris at the quarry, burning of items which should not have been brought there, dumping of boring fluids at the quarry and the allocating of $16,000 for site work for the new Aldi store in Mountain Home. It led to the elder Nault and Baxter County Judge Kevin Litty calling each other out in stories on KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot.In the meeting Tuesday, Litty says he explained to the committee how the agreement works that allows the debris to be brought to the quarry to be burned.

The judge says the county handles the burning since it is on county property.

Another item discussed in the Facebook post was the water quality in homes in the area. The judge says that was discussed as well in the meeting.

Also on the agenda was the landfill in northern Baxter County. Litty says the county doesn’t have much to do with it anymore since the state took it over. He says the state handles leachate removal.
