Woman injured, 2 cats dead after fire on Indy’s southeast side

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis firefighters responded to an apartment fire that left a woman critically injured and two cats dead on the city’s southeast side Thursday morning.

The Indianapolis Fire Department was dispatched around 10:25 a.m. to an apartment located in the 8500 block of Sedona Ridge Lane. IFD said firefighters arrived on the scene and were immediately met with thick black smoke and a fire that was still smoldering after causing “extensive” damage inside.

Firefighters rescued an unconscious 64-year-old woman from the apartment. She was evaluated on the scene before being transported to Eskenazi Hospital for treatment of critical injuries. IFD said two cats did not make it out of the apartment alive following the fire.

As of this article’s publication, the cause of the fire remains an active investigation.
