Winning Powerball ticket sold on West Virginia Lottery app

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — While many across the country are headed to their local convenience stores in the search for the winning Powerball jackpot ticket, one West Virginian found success in the palm of their hand.

In a release on Thursday, the West Virginia Lottery announced that one lucky winner won a $100,000 prize through a ticket purchased in the West Virginia Lottery iPlay app.

“This is such an exciting time in the lottery world,” Acting Director David Bradley said. “We had a

$50,000 winner last weekend and have this $100,000 winner from last night.”

Despite the big win, Bradley emphasized the need for West Virginians to check their old tickets, as the $1 million ticket sold in Hurricane in March is set to expire on Sept. 8. He also encouraged people to play responsibly as the Powerball jackpot climbs to more than $1.7 billion, the third-largest on record.

West Virginia has not had a Powerball jackpot winner since 2020, when an anonymous player claimed the prize with a cash value of $108,055,288, according to powerball.net. However, it’s not for a lack of trying, as West Virginians spent $441 on lottery tickets per capita in 2023, the eighth-most in the nation, according to LendingTree.
