(WFXR)- The Virginia State Police are reporting six people killed in fatal crashes over the Labor Day Weekend, down from ten in 2024.

In three of those fatal crashes, the victims were not wearing a seat belt. Two fatalities involved motorcycles. The VSP couldn’t determine if the sixth fatality was restrained or not.

The fatal crashes were reported in Alexandria, Chesapeake (2), Lynchburg, Norfolk, and Frederick County.

Effective July 1, 2025, drivers and their passengers are required by state law to buckle up, regardless of where they are seated in the vehicle. Children under the age of eight must be properly secured in a child safety seat or booster seat.

“Wearing a seat belt can save your life, and now, the law requires for all occupants,” said Colonel Matthew D. Hanley, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police.  “We want Virginians to have a safe Fall, and wearing a seat belt is one of the best ways to protect yourself while on the road.”

Available troopers and their supervisors were out in full force over the holiday weekend, according to VSP. It’s part of a nationwide effort called Operation C.A.R.E. or Crash Awareness Reduction Effort. They issued the following charges and citations.

  • 3,018 drivers cited for speeding
  • 1,370 drivers cited for reckless driving
  • 62 drivers charged with DUI
  • 499 seat belt violations
  • 116 child restraint violations

The VSP worked a total of 767 crashes over the Labor Day Weekend.
