Vermilion Parish targets excessive speeding with new crackdown

VERMILION PARISH, La. (KLFY) — Vermilion Parish law enforcement is cracking down on excessive speeding with stricter penalties, including license confiscation and potential arrest for severe violations.

The new measures, enforced by the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the judges of the Fifteenth Judicial District Court, aim to address a rise in extreme speeding incidents.

Drivers caught going 25 miles per hour over the speed limit will have their licenses confiscated and must appear in court, while those exceeding the limit by 35 miles per hour face arrest.

“After approaching the judges, we’re not reinventing the speed law. It’s already there. It’s the approach after the violation has been committed,” said Sheriff Eddie Langlinais of the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Langlinais noted an uptick in speeding, with some drivers reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour, which he described as “ridiculous and dangerous.”

Previously, speeders could simply pay their fines without further inconvenience, but the new penalties are designed to create a deterrent effect.

The enforcement is particularly important in Vermilion Parish due to its rural roads, which can be hazardous even at legal speeds.

Langlinais emphasized that the initiative is about public safety, aiming to protect both residents and visitors to the parish.

The collaborative effort between the sheriff’s office and local judges seeks to enhance road safety by making speeding violations more consequential. Sheriff Langlinais hopes these measures will reduce dangerous driving behaviors and improve safety for all road users.
