CHICAGO (WGN) – Just one day ago, President Donald Trump declared there’d be a surge in federal troops in Chicago, but on Wednesday evening, he walked that back.

“I want to go into Chicago and we have this incompetent governor that doesn’t want us,” Trump said. “So we’re making the determination now. Do we go to Chicago or do we go to a place like New Orleans where we have a great governor who wants us to come in?”

Vice President JD Vance echoed the president’s shift.

“There are no immediate plans, but the president has said he has the legal authority to protect American citizens, whether that’s in Chicago or Washington, D.C.,” Vance said.

According to Gov. JB Pritzker, staging began this week at Naval Station Great Lakes as officials prepare for expected immigration raids during Mexican Independence Day celebrations.

The governor said he still anticipates operations to begin this week.

“What we’re hearing is assemble on Friday, begin action on Saturday over the weekend,” Pritzker said.

The governor was recently in Pilsen where he met with community violence intervention teams after a violent Labor Day weekend in Chicago.

From Jan. 1, 2025 through the end of August of this year, Chicago police have reported 278 homicides. That’s more than 120 fewer than the same period last year.

Shootings are also down, with 560 fewer shootings reported this year than at this time last year.

After a judge ruled Trump broke the law in June when he ordered Marines and the National Guard into Los Angeles, Pritzker said his reason for not calling the president is a legal one.

“He’s going to end up in court and that will be a fact that they will use in court that the governor called to ask for help, and I’m sorry. I’m not going to provide him with evidence,” Pritzker said. “I’m just not going to do that.”

Instead of federal troops, Pritzker wants to see federal funding for violence prevention programs, which the Trump administration slashed earlier this year.
