On August 14, Rebecca Haro told police that Emmanuel was kidnapped outside a Yucaipa Big 5 Sporting Goods store by an assailant who knocked her unconscious and left her with a black eye.
However, investigators found inconsistencies in her story, and said the couple stopped cooperating with authorities. This led to their arrest on suspicion of murder at their home in Cabazon.
At a news conference, the Riverside County District Attorney said he believes Emmanuel was a victim of ongoing abuse and died from his injuries.
Jake and Rebecca Haro appeared in court on August 26, but the hearing was postponed so they could be assigned a public defender.
They are each being held on $1 million bail.
