Partnering with the Massachusetts Attorney General, Andrea Campbell, Bonta has opposed the VA’s proposed federal rule that would eliminate veterans and their families’ access to abortion care, according to the attorney general.

The Reproductive Health Service Rule was implemented by the Biden Administration in 2022. On Aug. 25, the Trump Administration published a proposed rule to formally undo the initial rule, Bonta said.

Before formally proposing to undo the rule, the Trump Administration held meetings with stakeholders, a coalition of attorneys general, VA officials and the Office of Management and Budget on April 8. Bonta said he attended the meeting to express why rolling back the rule from 2022 would cause harm to veterans and their families.

“As I have said before, medical decisions should be made by patients and their doctors — free from political interference,” Bonta said. “I’m proud to be co-leading my fellow attorneys general in calling on the Trump Administration to withdraw its proposed rule, which is both extreme and unjustified by any legal rationale.”
