The leaders of those three countries appeared together for a military parade as President Trump tries to force Russia to stop its war against Ukraine. President Trump said thousands of soldiers are dying in the war every week.
“Over a stupid war,” President Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday. “And I want to see it stopped.”
The war in Ukraine has isolated Russian President Vladimir Putin from the rest of the world. But in Beijing, Putin appeared with Chinese President Xi Jinpeng and North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Un at a large military parade.
“They were hoping I was watching. And I was watching,” President Trump said.
Un sent thousands of troops and military equipment to help Russian forces. China remains one of Russia’s largest trading partners.
President Trump said Russia will face severe consequences if it doesn’t agree to end the war soon. President Trump said he plans on speaking with Putin.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met with Putin in Beijing. President Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Indian imports into the U.S., because India buys Russian oil. President Trump accused India of fueling Russia’s war machine.
Asked whether he thinks the 50% tariffs pushed Modi away from the U.S., Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said, “I think it’s had an impact.” McCaul is the former chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee.
“I was disappointed to see Modi lining up with Chairman Xi and Putin and Kim Jong Un kind of becoming part of the unholy alliance, as I call it,” McCaul said.
President Trump said he’ll remove tariffs on Indian goods if India stops buying Russian oil.
