Suspect killed after several hours-long SWAT standoff in West Jordan

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available.

WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — West Jordan City issued a shelter-in-place order near 1900 W and 7300 S. After several hours, one suspect was killed.

According to the West Jordan Police Department, there was an active police presence in the area of 1900 west and 7300 south due to an armed individual. Three blocks are affected in any direction from the area.

Deputy Chief Jeremy Robertson says that West Jordan Police Department received a call around 5:15 p.m. that an individual was armed and possibly threatening other people inside a residence in the area.

Reportedly, several responding officers had responded to the same residence during previous incidents, according to Deputy Chief Robertson.

Initially, multiple people were inside the home. However, before law enforcement arrived, everyone besides the suspect and a female had left the residence. Law enforcement began negotiations with the suspect and reported that the other individual came outside sometime during negotiations.

Deputy Chief Robertson said that they would continue negotiations until it no longer seemed like negotiations would be successful or until the suspect left the home.

After several hours of efforts to get the suspect to surrender, negotiations stopped. West Jordan Police Department received and executed a search warrant to enter the home. They were able to make entry and reported that shots were fired around 9:20 p.m.

The suspect was shot during this incident and died as a result of those injuries. However, this remains an active investigation and police have not yet confirmed exactly how events transpired.

The shelter-in-place has been lifted, though restrictions remain in place for a clearly marked area directly near the residence, as it is an active crime scene.

Officer Ramirez, with the West Jordan Police Department, emphasized the importance of adhering to shelter-in-place operations and said it helps protect the public and law enforcement. He says that the shelter-in-place, in addition to drone activity and establishing a perimeter, are all standard protocol to ensure public safety and to gather as much information as possible.
