State Superintendent, educators say more work to be done amid high test scores for students
“I am pleased that North Carolina has achieved a three year high in most standardized end of grade and end of course assessments,” State Superintendent Mo Green said on Wednesday.
Data from the 2024-2025 school year shows in most areas, students are performing higher than they have in years. Compared to the year before, students scored higher in 12 out of 15 reading and math assessments.
Even better news: more students than ever are ending their school years in caps and gowns.
“We’re very excited today to recognize the highest four year cohort graduation rate for North Carolian at 87.7,” Dr. Tammy Howard, the Senior Director of the Office of Accountability and Testing in the Department of Public Instruction, said. “All of this shows consistent improvement in several areas that are indicative of the work and the effort that has been demonstrated across the state by our students, by our teachers, by our principals.”
Superintendent Green says he’s proud and excited, but not done yet. The Department of Public Instruction’s Strategic Plan is a blueprint to make North Carolina number one in public education nationwide by 2030. To get there, they’re focusing on a few areas.
“One is third grade reading, in which we will continue to build on the work we’re doing with the science of reading as a strong foundation,” Dr. Stacy Wilson-Norman, DPI’s Chief Academic Officer, said.
They also want to build a math framework to implement in K-12 classrooms. Superintendent Green says he wants every student to feel ready for their own future, something students say doesn’t go unnoticed.
“I just always feel supported, no matter what I do, no matter what career pathway I’m on, I just always feel like I have someone in my corner there,” Frederick Lindsey, a student, said.
Superintendent Green is encouraging the state and General Assembly to give schools the resources they need to continue this positive trend. He also said teacher recruitment and retention is a part of student success as well.
