RTA offering free rides on Claudette Colvin Day in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority will waive all fares on buses, streetcars and ferries for Claudette Colvin Day on Friday, Sept. 5.

Colvin, at the age of 15, refused to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery bus in 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks. Her arrest challenged segregation and set the stage for the Montgomery Bus Boycott and other actions during the Civil Rights Movement.

The RTA’s fare suspension stems from the Fare Policy adopted on Sept. 27, 2022. As part of the policy, the RTA observes Rosa Parks day on Feb. 4, Claudette Colvin day on Sept. 5 as well as waiving fares for major election days.
