But for one Stateline group, it’s more than a pastime—it’s a way of life.
Every Tuesday evening, a backyard in Rockford transforms into a medieval battlefield. That’s when Heartwood Foam Weapon Fighters, a local foam weapon fighting group, gathers to test their skill, athleticism, and strategy in battles that are as intense as they are inclusive.
“We line up on two different sides. We use foam weapons and we strike at each other,” said “Darque”, one of Heartwood’s fighters.
While the action may look chaotic to the casual observer, members say every swing, block, and charge is carefully planned. The group engages in a variety of combat formats, from free-for-alls and line battles to objective-based games like commander elimination and one-on-one duels.
“There are free-for-alls, where the winner’s the last one standing,” said “Einar,” another member. “Some battles have objectives like killing the other team’s commander. Or there are just one-on-one duels.”
Safety is a top priority. Headshots are generally off-limits—unless delivered by javelins, crossbows, or foam projectiles. A “kill” is registered when a fighter is struck in two limbs or the torso. Being hit in the head with a projectile or a foam rock, unless a fighter is wearing a helmet, is considered a kill.
Despite its nod to a historically brutal time period, Heartwood’s battles are rooted in teamwork and fun. The group often practices with other local organizations, including Khador Belegarth Medieval Foam Combat.
“We get along just fine,” a fighter named “Standard” said of Khador. “We try to get out to each other’s practices once in a while and get some training in with new people.”
Combat is only part of the Heartwood experience. Non-fighting members, or “non-coms” are just as active, contributing through crafts, costume-making, and cultural activities inspired by medieval life.
“There is a large, sort of cultural aspect to our organization,” non-com member known as Xylorosa said. “Many of us make our own garb or elements of it. Much of what you see is handmade. At the end of the day, we’re just a group of friends who get together and enjoy each other’s company.”
Some members compete in regional tournaments, but most are simply drawn to the community, creativity, and camaraderie that foam fighting offers.
Heartwood meets every Tuesday in Rockford and is actively seeking new members. For more information, find them on Facebook.
