Pedestrian killed after being hit by train at Murray Central Trax station

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available.

MURRAY, Utah (ABC4) — A pedestrian has been killed after being hit by a Blue Line train at the Murray Central Trax station.

According to Utah Transit Authority (UTA) Sr. Public Information Officer Gavin Gustafson, the accident happened just after 4:15 p.m. at the Murray Central station.

The person reportedly stepped in front of a Blue Line Trax train as it was approaching the station, and it appears that she was crossing from one platform to the other. She had headphones on and didn’t see or hear the train coming. She was hit and taken to the hospital, where she died due to her injuries.

Currently, it does not appear that this was an intentional act, and Gustafson said that this was an unfortunate accident. “It’s a grim reminder in this case to keep your wits about you and pay attention to your surroundings,” Gustafson said.

The individual has been identified as an 18-year-old female, and there is no further information about her identity at this time.

Gustafson said that because it happened at a peak time of travel, there were many people there who witnessed the incident. “It’s traumatic, certainly for the witnesses, but also for our operators who are operating the train to hit someone, that’s a majorly traumatic event for them,” he said.

UTA has advised passengers to expect 20-to-30-minute delays on the Blue and Red Trax lines, but Gustafson said that the delays may be closer to 30-to-60-minutes. A bus bridge is in effect between Fashion Place and Murray North stations. FrontRunner is on a separate platform at the station, so it is not affected.

Gustafson said that passengers should expect delays for several hours, potentially for the rest of the evening.

UTA Police and Murray City Police are on scene investigating the incident.
