
Troopers said of those 20 crashes, at least four are suspected to be OVI-related involving drugs and/or alcohol. Seven of the fatalities were not wearing seatbelts.
The data showed that Franklin County had more traffic incidents over Labor Day weekend than any other county in the state.
OHSP’s reporting period ran from Friday through Monday.
Two of those crashes happened in Gallia and Jackson counties in WOWK’s viewing area.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a single-vehicle crash Saturday night on State Route 850 in Gallia County took the life of 35-year-old Jeremy Morehart of Bidwell. He was traveling southbound on the road when his vehicle veered off the right side, striking a sign and a ditch before overturning. He was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt, according to OSHP and was ejected from the vehicle.
On Saturday morning, Wellston Police Officer 25-year-old Matthew Juniper was killed when a golf cart he was a passenger in was rear-ended by a vehicle. The cart was knocked off the left side of the road before hitting a tree. He was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. The driver of the golf cart was seriously injured, and the juvenile driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries.
