Oakton doctor sentenced after illegally prescribing opioids

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — David Allingham was the owner of Oakton Primary Care Center before his medical expertise and ethics was called into question.

While advertising his practice as an “Addiction Medicine Family Doctor” and helping patients with addiction. In reality, he would prescribe some patients opioids and amphetamines to some patients without a proper assessment, multiple people died of drug overdoses after receiving oxycodone prescriptions.

Between April 2019 and January 2024, Allingham wrote similar prescriptions outside of regulation and professional practice.

Without physically examining patients, Allingham authorized renewals of opioid medication, encouraging employees to use “mom and pop” pharmacies to avoid scrutiny as he prescribed high-dose opioids.

Allingham also prescribed amphetamines to multiple chronic pain patients to assist them in weight loss in contravention of regulations, regardless of whether the patients were obese.

He pleaded guilty in January, and was sentenced to 13 years in prison on Friday, Aug. 29.

In 2024 the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) served an Immediate Order to Show Cause (ISO) that resulted in Allingham surrendering his DEA registration number, relinquishing his authority to handle controlled substances.
