Liberty-Eylau ISD posts Ten Commandments in classrooms by law

TEXARKANA, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) – For students at Liberty-Eylau, Tuesday, September 2nd, was just a regular school day after a long Labor Day weekend. However, some may have noticed a new addition to their classroom walls that was not there last week.

That’s because the district is following a new Texas law that officially went into effect September 1, requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in all classrooms.

“I think it’s going to be a very positive aspect, maybe teach the kids to be a little kinder, but I don’t just necessarily think them being up is going to take care of everything,” said High School English Teacher Shannon Smith.

She said the new posters do not change the fact that it is educators who are ultimately responsible for guiding students.

“I think the way that the teachers model what to do and how to do will play a big part in that as well,” said Smith, “That’s the big thing is mentoring. Not necessarily just tell them and teach them, but to mentor.”

Liberty-Eylau ISD said the posters were donated by a local church and did not cost the district any money.
