Hopkins man charged with severely assaulting his grandmother

A 56-year-old has been charged after reportedly assaulting his grandmother.

Nermin Mandal faces one count of first-degree assault.

Authorities were called to an apartment in Hopkins on a report of an assault on Friday, according to the criminal complaint. There, they were met by Mandal’s son, who said that Mandal and Mandal’s grandmother live together in the apartment. When Mandal’s son got to the apartment, he found the woman unconscious and covered in blood.

Court documents state the victim’s face was swollen and covered with lacerations, her arms were broken, her eyes were swollen shut and she could be heard making moaning noises.

Authorities found Mandal inside the apartment with blood on his shirt and hands. He told police that his grandmother is an “alien” and that she killed his daughter.

Mandal’s son said that Mandal suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and that he believes Mandal is in deep psychosis.

The woman was brought to the hospital and diagnosed with a brain bleed, multiple facial fractures, a sternum fracture, and more. As of Tuesday, she was intubated and unconscious, with doctors saying that she may not survive, court documents state.
