Abbott issues extension of FEMA assistance registration period for July 4th flood victims

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Those affected by the July 4th flooding now have extra time to register for individual assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Governor Greg Abbott announced in a Tuesday press release an extension to the FEMA assistance registration period. Individuals now have until Sept. 28 to report damages and make claims to FEMA. The original deadline to register was Sept. 4.

Qualifying residents in Burnet, Guadalupe, Kerr, Kimble, McColluch, Menard, San Saba, and Tom Green, Travis and Willamson counties could be eligible to receive financial compensation for disaster-related expenses through FEMA’s Individual Assistance program.

Previous KXAN coverage reported on data from the 2025 Central Texas Flood Dashboard from Texas Appleseed, which revealed that only around 3% of the over 7,900 Central Texans who applied for FEMA disaster relief had flood insurance.

Of these applicants, 67% reported earning less than $60,000 per year, and 38% made $30,000 or less.

The floods killed at least 138 people across Central Texas. With survivors still rebuilding what remains of their livelihoods, Abbott thanked FEMA for helping to “ensure that all Texans who qualify for financial assistance have ample time to apply.”

In addition to local disaster outreach centers established in the affected communities, impacted Texans can apply for FEMA assistance online at disasterassistance.gov or call 800-621-3362.
