Will County deputies said the deadly shooting unfolded just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, in the 2300 block of East Exchange Street in Crete Township.
Deputies were initially called to the scene following a report of a shooting in the area and when they arrived, they found a parked black sedan riddled with bullet holes.
In total, deputies said they located about 40 shell casings in the area.
Upon further investigation, deputies found two victims inside the car: a female who had suffered gunshot wounds to her head and hand, and a male passenger who had been hit in the hip and buttock.
Deputies quickly began providing medical aid to the victim before paramedics arrived on the scene.
The victims were then taken to the hospital, where the male later died from his injuries. The second victim remains in critical condition.
It is unclear what led to the gunfire and the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities have not identified or provided ages for either victim involved and no arrests have been made.
