Cory Thone with the Kansas Lottery told 27 News that interest is building amongst new and old Powerball players in the Sunflower State in September thanks to a growing jackpot prize that could turn someone into a multi-millionaire overnight. He said that many people who don’t usually play lottery games start to buy tickets whenever jackpots cross the half-a-billion dollar threshold.
“Powerball is THE Lottery game, and this jackpot shows why,” Thone said. “The odds are long but the buy-in is low and the most fun part is thinking about what you would do with your winnings. How you would help your family, friends, and community.”
Thone said that last week’s sales records in late August showed a more than double increase in tickets that were sold. He linked this to the growth of the jackpot which recently hit $1.4 billion after 40 draws with no winner.
“Kansas last won the Powerball in November of 2022, so not that long ago!” Thone said. “Every ticket sold, whether at a Casey’s in Kansas, a bodega in Brooklyn or a gas station in California has the exact same chance to win.”
Powerball players in Kansas, like people in other states, face some rough odds for winning the grand prize. The Kansas Lottery reports that people have around a one in 25 chance of winning a prize but only a one in 292,201,338 of taking home the jackpot in the Powerball.
“Big jackpots are a lot of fun, but this type of energy can lead to some issues,” Thone said. “We want to remind players to play responsibly, set healthy limits, and keep it fun!”
The next Powerball drawing will be the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 3. The jackpot has a cash value of $634.3 million. You can learn more about how to play and check previous numbers by clicking here.
