Watch Live: Funeral for Army Veteran Michael Verardo

UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Michael Verardo, a true American hero and beloved member of the Weddington community, will be laid to rest on Tuesday with full military honors.

Michael passed away on August 26, 2025, after a 15-year battle with severe injuries he sustained in Afghanistan. He was just 26 years old when he was catastrophically wounded in 2010. Since then, he endured over 100 surgeries and years of intensive rehabilitation, authorities said.

His funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Weddington Methodist Church and will be streamed live for the public. The service will include special performances by the 82nd Airborne Chorus and John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting.

Michael’s life and legacy have left a lasting impact on the veteran community. His story inspired major programs through The Independence Fund and helped improve care across the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.

Tuesday’s service is expected to draw a large gathering of dignitaries, including former Vice President Mike Pence, Senator Thom Tillis, VA Secretary Doug Collins, and a delegation from the White House, among others. Governor Josh Stein has also ordered flags to fly at half-staff across North Carolina on Tuesday in Michael’s honor.

Michael is survived by his wife, Sarah, and their three daughters: Grace, Mary Scott, and Elizabeth.
