Recipe by Smith’s Chef Jeff Jackson
Italian Grinder Sandwiches
Ingredients
½ onion, minced
½ red bell pepper, minced
2 tbsp. garlic, minced
1 lb. ground beef
1 lb. sweet Italian sausage
1 tsp. kosher salt + ½ tsp. pepper
14 oz. bottle pizza sauce
1 lb. mozzarella, grated
6 hoagie buns
oil as needed
chopped parsley to garnish
Directions
1. Add a bit of oil to a skillet over medium high heat. Add in the beef and sausage and crumble the meat as it begins to brown. Add in the onion, bell pepper, garlic, salt and pepper.
2. Cook until all the meat is browned and the veggies are tender. Drain off any excess fat in the pan. Heat your oven to 425. Split the hoagie buns not going all the way through so the bun stays in one piece. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper and place on the buns.
3. Divide the meat mixture into the hoagie buns. Next, divide the pizza sauce on top of the meat in the buns. Sprinkle on the mozzarella cheese to cover all of the sandwiches.4. Place in the oven to bake 8-10 minutes or until the buns are toasty and the cheese is melted and browning. Garnish the sandwiches with chopped parsley. Enjoy!
