Measles case confirmed in Rains County

RAINS COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – NET Health has confirmed a case of measles in an adult resident of Rains County.

The person’s case of measles is travel-related, and according to NET Health, they’ve opted to remain isolated inside their home during the contagious period of the disease. They’ve since recovered from their case of measles.

“Persons who have been fully vaccinated against measles with two doses of the MMR vaccine
have a very low risk of contracting the disease,” NET Health said. “However, unvaccinated individuals remain at higher risk, as do those in some other groups.”

NET Health advised that children who are too young for vaccination, those with compromised immune systems and those who’ve only had one dose of the vaccine are particularly at risk of contracting measles.

  • High fever (may spike to over 104°F)
  • Cough, runny nose and/or red watery eyes
  • White spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots)
  • Appearance of a rash 3-5 days after symptoms begin

They warned that someone with the measles may be contagious up to four days before and after the have a rash. Anyone who suspects they may have contracted the measles is asked to seek medical care as soon as possible.
