Man accused of deadly DeKalb County fire that killed mother, injured son captured in Lanett

LANETT, Ala. (WRBL) –  A traffic stop in Lanett, Alabama, has led to the capture of a man wanted in connection with a deadly apartment fire in Georgia.

Lanett Police Chief Denise McCain confirms Officer Ledesma conducted a traffic stop on September 1 just off Interstate 85 in Lanett, Chambers County, Alabama, which resulted in the arrest of 44-year-old Shawn Fails.

Fails is wanted in connection with an apartment fire in the early morning hours of Monday in DeKalb County, Georgia. The blaze claimed the life of a woman and left her young son injured.

According to Chief McCain, Fails was taken into custody on a Fugitive from Justice charge and is being held at the Chambers County Detention Facility pending an extradition hearing. He faces charges in DeKalb County for murder, aggravated assault, and arson.

“The Lanett Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family affected by this heartbreaking incident,” Chief McCain said. She also expressed gratitude to all law enforcement partners whose cooperation and dedication led to the safe apprehension of the suspect.
