FORT HOOD, Texas (FOX 44) – The 1st Cavalry Division is celebrating more than a century of history with its annual Cav Week at Fort Hood.

The division is known worldwide for its yellow patch with the horse head and its motto — “America’s 1st Team.” It’s a reminder that whether troopers served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, or today — the connection never ends. Once Cav, always Cav.

Cav Week brings together soldiers and veterans through division runs, sports competitions, heritage tours and a Spirit of the Cav ceremony.

The 1st Cav has been part of some of the most defining moments in U.S. military history — from liberating Manila, to fighting on the Korean Peninsula, to the IA Drang Valley in Vietnam. That story was later told in the book and film “We Were Soldiers.”

Hollywood has shown the Cav in movies like “Apocalypse Now,” but for those who’ve worn the patch — the legacy is personal.

For them, Cav week isn’t just a celebration — it’s a promise kept.
