Two killed in Jefferson County crash, several hospitalized

TOPEKA (KSNT) – State troopers report that two people are dead following a three-vehicle highway crash in Jefferson County on Sunday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) reports that a Hyundai Kona SUV was traveling south on K-237 Highway around 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 31 where it meets U.S. 24 Highway. The driver of the Hyundai failed to stop at a stop sign and hit a Chevrolet Suburban that was traveling west on U.S. 24 Highway.

The KHP said the Chevrolet Suburban was hauling a boat trailer at the time of the crash which became detached and hit a Chevrolet Silverado. The driver of the Hyundai and a passenger in the Chevrolet Suburban died in the crash.

State troopers said the driver of the Hyundai was 33-year-old Shelby D. Copp of Oskaloosa. Two girls in her vehicle, a six-year-old and an eight-year-old, were hospitalized with serious injuries following the crash.

The KHP reported the driver of the Chevrolet Suburban, a 68-year-old man from Topeka, had serious injuries. His 66-year-old passenger, Connie J. Gould, died as a result of the crash.

Two 16-year-olds from Topeka were in the Chevrolet Silverado. Both were listed as uninjured.
